Terms of use
Last Updated: 1st March 2025
These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Carma platform ("Platform"), which facilitates vehicle borrowing and lending between users. By accessing or using Carma, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Platform.
1. Eligibility & User Verification
Carma is for individuals only—businesses may not use the platform. Users can sign up, browse, and post trips for free; however, to connect and message other users (and therefore borrow or lend cars), they must complete verification through a third-party platform. This verification includes identity checks and confirmation of a valid driving license.
Lenders must own their vehicles privately, Carma will verify uploaded insurance documents before allowing a vehicle to be listed.
2. User Responsibilities
2.1 Accurate Information
Users must provide accurate and up-to-date information when registering and using Carma.
2.2 Compliance with Laws
Users are responsible for ensuring compliance with all local, state, and national laws regarding vehicle use, insurance, and licensing.
2.3 Respectful Conduct
Carma has a zero-tolerance policy for abuse between users or attempts to use the platform for unlawful activities. Violations may result in an immediate ban.
3. Vehicle Lending & Borrowing
3.1 Vehicle Requirements
Vehicles listed on Carma must be roadworthy and compliant with all local laws and regulations. Only privately owned, four-wheeled vehicles are permitted.
3.2 Insurance & Liability
Carma does not provide insurance. It is the responsibility of both the lender and borrower to ensure that proper insurance is in place and complies with all legal requirements. Carma is not liable for damages, disputes, or insurance issues. Users must upload proof of insurance before listing a vehicle.
Carma does not recommend or facilitate any exchange of money between users for any reason.
3.3 Trip Cancellations & No-Shows
Cancellations and no-shows are entirely at the risk of users. Carma does not guarantee any service or reimbursement.
4. Membership, Payments & Fees
4.1 Membership Requirement
Users must pay a membership fee to unlock messaging and connect with others. Browsing and posting trips remain free.
4.2 Payment Processing
Carma integrates third-party payment providers (e.g., Stripe) to handle transactions securely.
4.3 No Guarantee of Service
Carma does not guarantee successful matches, completed trips, or refunds related to membership fees.
5. Ratings & Reviews
Users can rate and review each other after a trip. Reviews must be left within two weeks, after which the review option will be locked. Reviews remain hidden until both parties submit feedback, or after two weeks have passed (whichever comes first).
6. Dispute Resolution & Agreements
6.1 No Carma Involvement
Carma will not mediate or get involved in disputes between users. Any issues regarding damages, cancellations, or agreements are the sole responsibility of the lender and borrower.
6.2 Trip Agreements
Users must sign an agreement for each trip, which is between them and not between Carma and the users.
6.3 Arbitration
A basic arbitration process may be provided for disputes, but Carma does not guarantee a resolution.
7. Messaging & Off-Platform Communication
Carma does not prohibit users from sharing contact information or messaging outside the platform, as offline communication may be necessary. However, it is strongly recommended that users keep all planning and communication on the platform for security and documentation purposes.
8. Account Suspension & Termination
Carma reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms. Users who attempt to use the platform to drive without insurance, engage in fraud, or violate other policies risk being permanently banned.
9. Limitation of Liability
Carma acts as a facilitator and is not responsible for disputes, damages, or liabilities arising from user interactions. Users agree to release Carma from any claims related to vehicle borrowing or lending.
